Privacy policy
The short version
- Your library stays with you. Your words, sentences, notes and quiz progress are stored on your device. We never receive a copy.
- No accounts, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. We don’t ask for your name or email to use Florilex, and we don’t follow you across apps or websites.
- Looking up a word sends it to an AI service, once you allow it. To give you a definition, translation or synonyms, Florilex sends the word, the sentence it came from and the languages involved (and the photo, when you choose one) to Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI, through our server. Our server keeps none of it. Anthropic deletes it within 30 days and does not use it to train its AI.
1. What stays on your device
Everything you save in Florilex: your words and their meanings, the sentences and sources you capture, your notes, starred words, quiz results, settings and automatic backups. On the website it is kept in your browser’s storage for this address; in the Mac, iPhone and iPad apps, in the app’s own storage on the device. Exports and backups you make are files you control.
Files you import (a word list, a backup, a Kindle’s Vocabulary Builder) are read on your device. The iPhone widget and the daily review reminder are worked out on your device too.
Florilex speaks words aloud using your device’s own voices; nothing is sent for that. Dictating a sentence uses your keyboard’s microphone, handled by your device, not by Florilex.
2. What is sent to answer a lookup
Before your first lookup, Florilex explains this and asks you to allow it. You can turn it off again in Settings › Data & help. When you look up a word, ask Florilex to read a photo, check a sentence you wrote in Use it, or ask for a story, the app sends:
- the word or expression, the sentence around it, and the languages involved;
- the photo you chose, so the AI can find its text;
- the sentence you wrote, in Use it;
- for a story, the words chosen for it (your newest in one language and a few to review) and the meanings you saved;
- during the beta, your invite code, so our server can check it.
Our server (run on Vercel, Inc., a hosting company) passes the request to Anthropic and returns the answer. It does not store the content. Like any website, Vercel briefly keeps technical request logs (for example the time, the address of the page, your browser type and your internet address) for up to one hour, and uses internet addresses to stop abuse such as too many requests at once. Our server does not pass your internet address to Anthropic.
Anthropic, PBC receives the content of the request and produces the answer. Under its terms for business customers, Anthropic deletes requests and answers within 30 days, does not use them to train its models, and may keep content its safety systems flag for up to two years.
If you’d rather not allow lookups, you can still use the parts of Florilex that don’t need the AI: typing your own definitions, quizzes, your library.
Please don’t put private information in a lookup. Choose photos of the page you’re reading rather than of people or documents.
3. Reporting a problem
Report a Problem opens a form on our website, florilex.app. It is filled in with technical details (the app version, your browser or device type, the error) and never your words or sentences. Nothing is sent unless you submit it. What you submit, including anything you type and an email address if you choose to give one, is kept in our website’s dashboard to deal with the report, and deleted within 12 months.
4. Fonts, updates and other services
- Fonts are part of the app; your device doesn’t fetch them from anyone.
- Mac app updates: each time it opens, the Mac app asks GitHub, Inc. whether there is a new version. GitHub sees your internet address, as for any download.
5. Children
Florilex is not directed at children under 13 (16 in the EU), and we don’t knowingly collect their information. Lookups are not linked to any person.
6. Your choices and rights
- See, export or delete your library: all of it is on your device; use Share › Export, or Settings › Data & help › Delete all data.
- Stop lookups: turn AI lookups off in Settings › Data & help; nothing is sent after that.
- Your rights: depending on where you live (for example under the EU’s GDPR or California’s privacy laws) you may have the right to access, correct or delete personal information we hold, or to object to how it’s used. As we hold no account or library data, this mostly concerns problem reports; write to privacy@florilex.app. You may also complain to your data protection authority.
- EU and UK legal basis (GDPR): we process lookups to provide the service you ask for (contract), and keep short technical logs and reports for our legitimate interest in running and fixing the service. Anthropic and Vercel process data in the US for us, under standard contractual clauses.
7. Security
Everything Florilex sends travels encrypted (HTTPS). Your library is protected by your device.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, we’ll update the date above and, for important changes, say so in the app.
